Women's Soccer Falls is Region X Semi-Final
Women's Soccer traveled to USC Lancaster to take on USC Sumter in the Region X Semi Final. This would be the third match up between the Flying Eagles and the Fire Ants, with the Fire Ants winning the previous two. The winner would move on the Championship game against the number one seeded Lancers from USC Lancaster.
It was a slow start for the Flying Eagles, and the Fire Ants took advantage in the 10th minute when Karely Gonzalez collected a miss clearance at the top of the box and tucked it in the corner past Flying Eagles goalkeeper Reygan Newcomer. The Fire Ants were not done attacking, in the 25th minute Briza Villagrana broke thru the Flying Eagles back line to make it 2-0. That score would hold up through the remainder of the half.
In the second half, the Flying Eagles came out fighting. Sophmores Anna Muesler and Jillanda Sandy paced the attack creating multiple chances for the Flying Eagles, however they were unable to convert. In the 81st minute, USC Sumter added a third goal, it was Briza Villagrana again, this time she collected the rebound off a shot initially saved by Newcomer and put away the rebound. The Flying Eagles continued to fight, just 4 minutes later, Sophomore Miah Mead broke through and got her first career goal. The Flying Eagles continued to create chances, they were just unable to convert.
Muesler led the Flying Eagles with 5 shots and Sandy chipped in with 3 shots. Goalkeeper Reygan Newcomer finished the game with 6 saves.
Coach Schetka added these thoughts " I am extremely proud of the fight the girls showed today, even though we didn't get off to a great start, we continued to battle and created some quality chances, however today was just not our day. These girls have shown so much heart and determination this season dealing with all different types of adversity, I wanted this for them so bad, but hats off to USC Sumter as they converted their chances."
