CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — Southwest Virginia women's basketball earned its second straight home victory on Friday afternoon, defeating Fayetteville Technical CC 67–60 inside the King Community Center. The win lifts the Flying Eagles to 3–2 overall and caps a strong week of play.
SWCC opened the game with noticeable energy on both ends, forcing tough shots early and converting high-percentage looks in transition. The Flying Eagles held an early 13–11 advantage after the first quarter, with freshman guard Kara Kelley sparking the offense with confident shot-making on the perimeter.
The second quarter proved to be one of the team's best defensive periods of the young season. SWCC allowed just 11 points in the frame while piecing together multiple scoring runs. Grace Harvey controlled the paint with efficient finishing, and Emma Owens attacked the rim to draw trips to the free-throw line. By halftime, the Flying Eagles had pushed the lead to 34–22, their largest margin of the game.
Fayetteville Tech responded in the third quarter, using offensive rebounding and a burst from Amire Banks to narrow the gap. Despite being outscored 20–18 in the period, SWCC remained steady thanks to timely threes from Kelley and strong rebounding from Harvey and Kelley. The Flying Eagles carried a 52–42 lead into the fourth.
The Trojans made one final push late in the fourth quarter, cutting the margin to single digits, but the Flying Eagles delivered clutch defensive stops to protect their advantage. Abby Berry and Owens knocked down key free throws to seal the win.
Kelley led all scorers with 19 points, adding eight rebounds and four assists in one of her most complete performances this season. Harvey finished with 13 points on an impressive 6-of-7 shooting, while Owens posted 11 points, including seven at the line. Vannoy rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, and Destiny Word chipped in seven rebounds off the bench.
SWCC shot 44.9% from the field, limited Fayetteville Tech to 29.3% shooting, and forced 12 steals—a defensive effort that ultimately shaped the outcome.
The victory marks the third win in the last four games for the Flying Eagles, who continue to build momentum as Region 10 play heats up.
