Flying Eagles Extend Winning Streak with Back-to-Back Wins

Saturday, Feb. 1 – SWCC vs. Brunswick CC
The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Flying Eagles (9-7, 7-4) soared past Brunswick Community College (2-10, 0-10) on Saturday, dominating the game with a commanding 89-48 victory. A decisive second quarter proved to be the difference-maker, as SWCC outscored the Dolphins 26-2 to take a commanding 51-17 lead into halftime.
Sophomore Maddie Day led the charge with a season-high 26 points, including an explosive 18-point second quarter. The Tazewell native’s hot shooting set the tone for the Flying Eagles' dominant performance.
Freshman Emma Owens also had a career night, contributing 20 points, including four three-pointers. SWCC controlled the paint, outscoring Brunswick 32-2 inside.
Sunday, Feb. 2 – SWCC vs. Louisburg College
Less than 24 hours after their win, the Flying Eagles (10-7, 8-4) hit the road to take on Louisburg College (5-7, 6-8) in a tough back-and-forth battle. Despite a four-point halftime deficit, SWCC rallied in the second half to secure a 67-58 victory, extending their winning streak to four games.
Sophomore Paige Niethammer delivered another dominant performance, leading the team with 28 points—her ninth 20+ point game of the season. The Cocke County High School alum continues to shine on the national stage, currently ranked #13 in NJCAA Division II in scoring, averaging 20.9 points per game. She is also approaching the 1,000-point career milestone at SWCC.
In addition to her offensive dominance, Niethammer controlled the boards, grabbing 16 rebounds, further solidifying her nation-leading average of 15.2 rebounds per game.
Maddie Day stayed hot from beyond the arc, finishing with 20 points, including five three-pointers. She has been lethal from deep in Region 10 play, shooting 42.3% from three-point range.
Freshman Kierstin Johnson made her presence felt on the glass, hauling in a game-high 19 rebounds, helping SWCC control the tempo and limit second-chance opportunities for Louisburg.
The Flying Eagles will look to keep their momentum going on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Fayetteville Tech. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
