Cedar Bluff, VA- The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Flying Eagles women's basketball team continued their dominant run, securing their eighth straight victory with a 67-57 win over Wake Tech CC on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Tamila Francis was the catalyst for SWCC’s offense, pouring in a career-high 22 points while also orchestrating plays with eight assists. Her all-around performance, coupled with a tenacious defensive effort that included six rebounds and five steals, proved instrumental in the Flying Eagles' success.
A key factor in the victory was SWCC’s aggressive play, particularly in getting to the free-throw line. The Flying Eagles capitalized on their opportunities, hitting 22 of 29 free throws, while Wake Tech struggled in that department, managing just one make on four attempts. Paige Niethammer, who was honored pregame for surpassing 1,000 career points, set the tone at the stripe, knocking down 9 of 10 free throws en route to a 21-point, 19-rebound double-double—her 20th of the season.
SWCC built a commanding 34-22 halftime lead, fueled by a dominant second quarter. However, Wake Tech responded in the third, cutting the deficit to seven heading into the final frame. Despite the push, the Flying Eagles maintained their composure, with Grace Harvey joining Francis and Niethammer in double figures. Harvey finished with 10 points, doing much of her damage at the line (6-of-8 FT).
With momentum on their side, SWCC now shifts focus to their next matchup on Tuesday, February 18, when they hit the road to face Catawba Valley. The Flying Eagles will look to complete the season sweep after routing Catawba Valley 87-46 in their previous meeting. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
