CATAWBA, NC — The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Women’s Basketball team continued their impressive run on Tuesday night, overpowering Catawba Valley Community College 97-53 to secure their ninth consecutive victory.
Sophomore forward Paige Niethammer delivered a dominant performance, pouring in 36 points and controlling the paint from start to finish. Niethammer’s stellar night also included 13 rebounds, marking her 21st double-double of the season.
Just as in their previous matchup, the Flying Eagles imposed their will inside, scoring 58 points in the paint. SWCC’s post players combined for 53 of those points, highlighting their inside presence. Freshman Kierstin Johnson contributed 10 points, while fellow freshman Grace Harvey chipped in seven.
The Flying Eagles’ dominance extended beyond scoring, as they controlled the glass with a 54-24 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive boards. Their relentless effort on both ends stifled Catawba Valley and created countless second-chance opportunities.
Sophomore guard Maddie Day provided a strong perimeter presence, tallying 16 points and knocking down four three-pointers. SWCC caught fire from deep, shooting a season-best 50% from beyond the arc.
Freshman guards Tamila Francis and Emma Owens also reached double figures, adding to SWCC’s balanced attack. Owens scored 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Francis contributed 11 points and dished out six assists.
The Flying Eagles (now riding a nine-game win streak) will look to make it 10 in a row when they return home on Saturday, February 22, to face Bryant & Stratton. SWCC will aim to avenge an earlier loss to the Bobcats in a pivotal matchup. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM at the King Community Center, with a special Sophomore Day ceremony taking place before the game.
