Cedar Bluff, Va- The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Women’s Basketball team (6-7, 5-4) faced a tough challenge on Sunday afternoon, hosting #23 Cape Fear Community College (15-1, 12-1) at the King Community Center. A strong second quarter from the Sea Devils, where they outscored the Flying Eagles 23-12, helped Cape Fear secure a 68-54 victory.
SWCC struggled to control the game in the paint, where Cape Fear held a 36-24 scoring advantage. Sophomore standout Paige Niethammer fought hard to keep the Flying Eagles competitive, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Grace Harvey also made the most of her third start this season, contributing 8 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting performance.
The Flying Eagles couldn’t find their rhythm from long range, hitting just 2-of-10 three-point attempts. Tamila Francis and Emma Owens each knocked down one from deep, but it wasn’t enough to match Cape Fear’s five three-pointers or their efficient 46% shooting from the field.
Turnovers proved costly for SWCC, as Cape Fear forced 29 and turned them into 35 points. In contrast, the Flying Eagles only managed 11 points off the Sea Devils’ 18 turnovers, a crucial factor in the outcome.
The Flying Eagles will aim to bounce back on Wednesday, January 29th, when they host Catawba Valley Community College at 6 p.m. in the King Community Center.
