Cedar Bluff, VA- The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) women’s basketball team bounced back in dominant fashion Tuesday night, cruising to an 83-59 victory over NCAA Division II University of Mount Olive JV. The Flying Eagles set the tone early, outscoring the Trojans 24-8 in the first quarter and delivering another strong performance in the third, where they doubled up their opponents to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore Maddie Day led the offensive charge, pouring in 26 points to match her season high from earlier this month against Brunswick CC. The Tazewell, VA, native shot an efficient 9-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Fellow sophomore Paige Niethammer added 22 points on a stellar 9-of-11 shooting night. However, the Newport, TN, standout saw her impressive streak of 14 consecutive double-doubles come to an end, as she finished just shy of double-digit rebounds for only the second time this season.
Freshmen Kierstin Johnson and Grace Harvey stepped up on the glass, both recording double-doubles to help control the paint. Johnson contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Harvey provided a spark off the bench with 11 points and 10 boards.
The Flying Eagles now turn their focus to the final stretch of Region 10 play. They hit the road for back-to-back matchups, facing Cape Fear CC on Thursday and Guilford Tech on Friday. Both games are set for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
