Defense and Dominance in the Paint Earns WBB 1st Win of 2024
Defense and dominance in the paint gave the Flying Eagles the win in their 79-56 defeat of Guilford Tech CC in their Region X opener on Wednesday night. This earned SWCC their first win in the young season, while dropping Guilford Tech to 1-2.
The Flying Eagles came out determined to set the tone early with their defense, using a 15-0 run to get out in front. The stifling defense continued into the second quarter where the Flying Eagles held Guilford Tech to only 10 points, putting SWCC up by a score of 40-10 at the half-time break. The Flying Eagles dominated on the defensive glass pulling down 36 rebounds. Freshman Tamila Francis led the way with 4 steals, with the team totaling 10. Not only did SWCC turn Guilford Tech over, but they turned those turnovers into points, scoring 22 points off turnovers.
On the offensive end, SWCC dominated the paint. The Flying Eagles scored 54 of their 79 points in the paint. Sophomore Paige Neithammer led the Flying Eagles on offense with 28 points on 12 of 17 shooting and a perfect 4-4 from the foul line. Sophomore Maddie Day chipped in with an efficient 14 points going 6 of 8 from the field, including 2 of 4 from behind the arc. Tamila Harris ran the offense well dishing out a team high 8 assists in addition to 7 points.
The Flying Eagles look to build on this win as they host Louisburg College on Saturday Nov. 16th at 2:00 PM for another Region X battle.
