Cedar Bluff, Va- The Flying Eagles (6-6, 5-3) hit the road on Saturday, looking to turn things around against Brunswick CC (0-8, 2-8) in a Region X showdown—and they delivered in a big way. Behind a career-high 19 points from freshman Kayllyn Vannoy, SWCC snapped their four-game losing streak with an 82-55 win. Vannoy, a Paintsville, KY native, was on fire from beyond the arc, sinking five three-pointers to lead the way.
The Flying Eagles wasted no time taking control. A quick 10-0 run helped them jump out to a 12-2 lead. Freshman Tamila Francis sparked things on defense with a steal she turned into a coast-to-coast layup. On the next possession, Kierstin Johnson swatted a shot that set up Emma Owens for a fast-break and-one. Sophomores Maddie Day and Paige Niethammer got in on the action, with Day drilling a three-pointer and Niethammer cleaning up the glass for a putback. Vannoy then came off the bench and drained two threes to close out a dominant first quarter, giving SWCC a 23-13 lead.
The second quarter was more evenly matched, but Maddie Day made sure SWCC stayed in control. The Tazewell, Va., sharpshooter scored 11 of her 17 points in the quarter, knocking down three triples. As a team, the Flying Eagles connected on 10 three-pointers in the first half, doubling Brunswick's total of five. SWCC went into halftime up 40-27.
In the second half, the Flying Eagles put the game out of reach. They owned the paint, scoring 34 points inside and dominating the boards with 23 offensive rebounds. Sophomore Paige Niethammer was an unstoppable force, grabbing 22 rebounds—including 10 on the offensive end—and matching that effort with 22 points for an incredible double-double. Brunswick simply couldn't handle SWCC's balanced attack of three-point shooting and inside dominance.
With the win, the Flying Eagles snapped their losing streak and built some momentum heading into their next game. They'll host the JV squad from NCAA DII University of Mount Olive on Tuesday Jan. 21st at the King Community Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
