Flying Eagles Triumph in Close Victory Over Fayetteville Tech
Cedar Bluff, VA- The Flying Eagles (5-2,4-1) battled in a defensive game with Fayetteville Tech (4-4,2-4) in a Sunday matinee in the King Community Center. In a back-and-forth game, the Flying Eagle ran their win streak to 3 games with a final of 57-51.
Fayetteville jumped out to a quick 5-0 run to put the pressure on from the tip. Freshman Kierstin Johnson broke the run and got the Flying Eagles offense started. The Wilkesboro, NC native chipped in 10 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half with defense, with neither team being able to pull away, at the half, the Flying Eagles were able to slightly separate themselves by the score of 28-25.
After the intermission, the Flying Eagles forced Fayetteville Tech into a shooting slump, holding the Trojans to only 4 points in the third quarter. Paige Niethammer led the Flying Eagles with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomore Maddie Day hit double figures for the fourth straight game, adding 11 points, including hitting two of the Flying Eagles three made three-pointers.
Southwest held the Trojans to 25 percent shooting from the field for the game and 11 percent from behind the arc while dominating on the glass, outrebounding Fayetteville Tech 52-37. The Flying Eagles were also superior from the foul line, knocking down 16 of 23 attempts while the Trojans only hit 12 of their 22 attempts.
Coach Lambert’s bunch returns to action on Tuesday, December 17th, when they host Cleveland Community College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM, and this is the last opportunity to see the flying Eagles before the new year.
