Wake Tech’s Bats Too Much for SWCC in Four-Game Series
Series Recap: vs. Wake Tech CC
04/13/25 | Shaun Schetka
CEDAR BLUFF, VA — SWCC came out strong in Saturday’s opener against Wake Tech, but a massive second inning from the visitors turned the tide quickly, and the Flying Eagles couldn’t recover in a 21–7 loss.
Things started off on a high note for SWCC. Ciera Skeens singled to center in the bottom of the first, and after an error and a passed ball, the Flying Eagles were up 3–0.
But Wake Tech answered with a huge seven-run second inning — all with just two hits — and suddenly had all the momentum. Kinsley Hanner’s two-RBI single was the spark, and from there, it was all Wake Tech.
SWCC briefly tied the game at 7–7 in the bottom half thanks to a single by Emma Wilcox and a two-run double from Kimber Amos, but Wake Tech just kept piling on. A triple and walk pushed two more across in the third, and then a two-run homer from Cyndia Dobbins in the fifth made it 11–7.
The real backbreaker came in the sixth when Wake Tech dropped another seven-run inning. Hanner’s three-run double and Abby Miller’s three-run homer blew it wide open.
Wilcox took the loss for SWCC, pitching all six innings and battling through 14 Wake Tech hits. Skeens and Erin Rasnake led the offense with two hits apiece, and Amos drove in three.
Hanner finished with a monster day for Wake Tech — 3-for-4 with seven RBIs — as they racked up 14 hits and eight walks in the win.
SWCC Bounces Back With Commanding Win Over Wake Tech
SWCC didn’t let the earlier loss linger for long.
The Flying Eagles came out swinging in Saturday’s second game, scoring in each of the first three innings and cruising to a 10–2 win at home.
Erin Rasnake and Kimber Amos each drove in a run in the first, and then the bats really came alive in the second. SWCC put up five runs on six hits, with big swings from Ciera Skeens, Amos, and Emma Wilcox. A third-inning RBI from Macie Adkins and a Skeens double added two more.
Adkins also took care of business in the circle. The sophomore gave up just two earned runs across five solid innings, didn’t walk a batter, and earned the win.
Amos went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Skeens drove in three runs to lead the offense. Wilcox, Miah Mead, and Adkins all chipped in with multi-hit games as SWCC totaled 13 hits on the day.
Wake Tech’s Gabby Penny was a bright spot, going 3-for-3, but the Flying Eagles’ defense and timely hitting proved too much in Game 2.
Early Explosion Lifts Wake Tech Over SWCC on Sunday
Sunday’s opener was a tough one for SWCC as Wake Tech jumped out to a nine-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, handing the Flying Eagles a 16–2 loss.
It was a nightmare first frame for SWCC. Wake Tech sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on seven hits and four walks. By the time the inning ended, the Eagles were facing an uphill battle.
Wake Tech tacked on more in the second and third innings, eventually stretching their lead to 13–0 before SWCC managed to push across two runs in the bottom of the third.
Ciera Skeens brought both home with a base hit, but that was about all the offense could muster against Wake Tech’s L. Correll, who struck out 11 and allowed just one hit in five innings.
Emma Wilcox and Kimber Amos split time in the circle for SWCC. Despite the rough start, the team played clean defense with no errors in the field.
Wake Tech piled up 17 hits, led by Kelly Anderson’s 3-for-3 effort and multi-RBI games from five different players.
Late Surge Sinks SWCC in Series Finale
In the final game of the weekend, SWCC battled hard but couldn’t keep pace with a hot fifth inning from Wake Tech, falling 11–4 on Sunday afternoon.
Wake Tech scored first, but SWCC tied things up in the bottom of the first when Reagan McCoy knocked in a run with a single to left.
The game stayed tight until the fifth, when Wake Tech strung together six hits and scored six runs to take a 7–1 lead. The big inning proved too much to overcome.
Macie Adkins pitched a complete game for SWCC, allowing 15 hits and 11 runs (seven earned) while striking out five.
At the plate, Wilcox, Rasnake, and Amos all had two hits each, with Wilcox driving in two runs. SWCC also turned a double play on defense.
Gabby Penny had another big day for Wake Tech, going 4-for-5, while Cyndia Dobbins and Ashlyn Gaskin each drove in a pair.
