Getting To Know Coach Huffman

We had the opportunity to ask Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach Tammy Huffman three questions. If you are interested in running Cross Country at the D3 level in the NJCAA please submit an interest form at https://swccsports.com/recruit
When did your passion for running begin?
My passion for running began after both of my daughters left home for college. I entered my first event when I was 40 something...a local cancer run in memory of my dad. I walked because I wasn't able to run. As I watched runner after runner sprint across the finish line, I thought to myself, "my dad deserves better," so I decided to train to run the following year. I developed a plan that worked for me, setting small attainable goals and charting progress...run a lap, walk a lap. Before I knew it there were too many track laps to count! Eventually I branched out to running longer distances and trail running. I was hooked! They say running is addictive, and I will have to agree! Healthy feels good. As a non-traditional athlete, all I can say is I wish I had started running sooner.
Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences have been my local running community. This region has an abundance of well-trained athletes, and the support I have received from my friendly competitors is unsurpassed. What better motivation than to find a buddy (now I have an entire team) who will climb hills, cross creeks, and run miles with you? A little encouragement goes a long way.
What life-long lesson can be instilled in your athletes?
The biggest competitor you should ever meet is yourself. Run until YOU are proud. Stay focused on the reasons you like to run and the benefits it brings. Running can be a life-long sport, enjoyed long after high school and college. Be the reason someone else chooses to become a runner.
