Getting to know Coach Greenway

Getting to know Coach Greenway

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

1a. I'm Bryan Greenway and a lifelong resident of this region which I absolutely love. Ive been married 29 years to my wife Lisa and we have one son Nelson who is 16 and a student at John Battle High School in Bristol.

1b. My experience in competitive golf is vast including a great jr. golf career. I  played collegiate golf at ETSU, and also played in numerous Amateur events.  Additionally, I spent 8 years in the PGA. I am proud to say that I have won on every level that I competed. Before arriving at Southwest Va CC, I was the golf coach at Abingdon High School for 3 years in the 90s, while in the PGA. I lead the team to their first district title in 22 years. After a long hiatus from coaching I returned in 2020 to take the head coach position for John S Battle High School untill spring of 2022, to coach golf for Southwest Va CC.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START COACHING?

2. I've always had a passion for teaching golf, which I've continued  to do after I left the PGA. I have always had a special passion for Jr. Golf, and I'm always looking for ways to contribute to it. I didn't exactly set out to be a coach, but coaching is a great vehicle to teach the game, and be involved in Jr. golf in a positive way.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO COME COACH AT SWCC?

3. In a way, I think Southwest found me. This was the first time in my life that I searched college golf coaching positions, more out of curiosity than actually thinking about applying for a position.  I saw a position at Southwest which is relatively close to my home and decided I wanted to give it a try. It has been one of the best  career decisions that I've ever made.

WHAT IS A MESSAGE YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT TRYING OUT FOR SWCC GOLF?

4. For student/athletes wanting to join our program I can promise both my assistant coach and I are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about this sport. While we are very competitive, we also have a strong desire to see our men and women excel not only in academics and golf, but also in life.
