Cedar Bluff, VA – The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) men’s basketball team returned to the King Community Center for their penultimate home game, determined to avenge an early-season loss to Guilford Tech CC. The Flying Eagles (6-11, 3-10) rose to the occasion, securing a 93-81 victory over the Titans (8-14, 4-8), fueled by a breakout performance from freshman Jabarey Hunt.
Making his first start of the season, Hunt made an immediate impact, tallying a career-high 20 points while shooting an efficient 50% from the field. The Chesapeake, VA native, also contributed five rebounds in his most significant minutes of the year, showcasing his potential as a key contributor.
Sophomore Corean Nelson bounced back with a strong offensive performance, matching Hunt’s 20 points. The Sumter, SC guard was relentless in attacking the basket, adding eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists to his stat line. Meanwhile, sophomore Anthony Leath provided a sharpshooting spark from beyond the arc, finishing with 18 points, including four three-pointers.
The night, however, belonged to freshman Adrian Mayes, who dominated in the paint with a game-high 30 points. Mayes was unstoppable, connecting on 13 of 21 field goal attempts and asserting his presence on the boards with a career-high 21 rebounds.
After the game, head coach Jame "JJ" Thatcher praised his team’s effort and resilience:
“Players stepped up when we needed it most to secure an important region win. Jabarey’s 20 points in his first start were huge for us. We’ll need continued contributions from everyone as we push through the remainder of the Region 10 schedule.”
The Flying Eagles hit the road this weekend, facing Central Carolina CC on Saturday, February 15, before taking on Fayetteville Tech on Sunday, February 16. Tip-off for both games is set for 3:00 PM.
