Cedar Bluff, Va- Four guys in double figures were not enough offense for SWCC Men’s Basketball to pick up their second Region X win Monday night. The Flying Eagles (2-4,1-3) fell to Catawba Valley Community College (5-2,2-0) 112-104.
Anthony Leath got the scoring going for the Flying Eagles on his way to his best statistical performance so far. The Westmoreland, TN native had 23 points on 8 of 12 shooting and led the attack from behind the arc hitting on 5 of 9 from three. The Sophomore also contributed to running the offense with 6 assists. The first half was back and forth with neither team really being able to separate themselves. Both teams could never get further than 7 points ahead, before the opponent would close the gap and get back to even.
Sophomore Corean Nelson led the Flying Eagles in the game with 32 points. The shooting guard went 11 for 11 from the foul line which helped the team stay in the game late in the 2nd half. SWCC went 24 of 25 from the line on the night, getting to the line nine more times than the Redhawks. Nelson has become mister reliable on offense for SWCC averaging 29.8 points per game on the season.
Post player Adrian Hunter-Mayes continued to be a force in the low blocks for SWCC. The Freshman put up 26 points on 10 of 12 shooting. He was also the main force on the glass grabbing 11 boards including 5 on the offensive end. The Durham, NC native added 4 blocks as well.
As dominant as the guys were, Catawba Valley matched it all night, and even exceeded it. The Redhawks were led by Benton Wofford, who dropped 24 points on 9 of 13 from the field. Zackery Goodman was another big-time shooter for Catawba, hitting 4 three pointers that all seemed to come in clutch moments. The Redhawks were able to grab 27 offensive rebounds against SWCC, which they turned into 34 second chance points. Whereas the Flying Eagles were only able to grab 11 offensive boards.
Coach Mullins’s team returns to the hardwood on Saturday as they host Region X opponent Pitt Community College (3-1, 0-1) at the King Community Center. Tip-Off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
