CHARLOTTE, NC – The Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) Men’s Basketball team had two of its stars earn All-Region honors, as Corean Nelson and Adrian Mayes were named to the Third Team, the league announced Monday.
Nelson, a sophomore from Sumter, SC, wrapped up an incredible career at SWCC in style. He led the league in scoring, putting up 24.5 points per game, a number that also ranks him sixth in the nation among NJCAA Division II players. Along the way, he surpassed 1,000 career points and notched a career-high 38-point performance against Louisburg. He finished the season shooting 43% from the field and just under 32% from three.
Joining him on the Third Team is freshman Adrian Mayes, who wasted no time making an impact. The Durham, NC native matched Nelson’s 24.5 points per game, tying for the league scoring title. But he didn’t stop there—he also led the league in rebounding (10.3 RPG) and was the most efficient scorer in the conference, hitting 64.5% from the field—fifth-best in the nation at the NJCAA Division II level.
With the regular season in the books, the Flying Eagles aren’t done yet. They’ll hit the road tonight for a huge Region 10 Playoff showdown against Louisburg College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM, and SWCC will be looking to keep its postseason dreams alive.
