Cedar Bluff, VA- Southwest Virginia Community College couldn’t keep up with New River Community College on Tuesday, suffering a tough 13-1 defeat at home.
It didn’t take long for New River CC to take control, jumping out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Third baseman Nathan Wesley singled to score the first run, followed by a pair of costly errors that allowed three more runs to cross the plate, putting New River up 4-0 before SWCC even had a chance to respond.
The visitors kept pouring it on in the second inning. First baseman Bryson Bradley doubled to center, Wesley singled down the left field line, and Reed Hutchinson added a sacrifice fly to bring in another run, stretching the lead to 7-0.
SWCC sent Kian Manske to the mound, but the right-hander struggled, allowing four runs (one earned) on two hits in just one inning of work. He struck out three and walked one. On the other side, New River CC’s Nick Krantz was in complete control. The righty pitched five strong innings, giving up just one run and three hits, while striking out four and walking three.
Offensively, the flying eagles only managed three hits all game. Damien Boyd, Colt Tate, and Kensley Joachim each had one, with Cason McInnis driving in the team’s lone run.
New River CC, on the other hand, racked up 10 hits, with Wesley leading the charge with a perfect 3-for-3 performance. Hutchinson, second baseman Chauncey Mays, and short stop Nick Golden each drove in three runs, while Bradley and Hutchinson added multiple hits.
SWCC returns to action this weekend when they host Patrick & Henry CC for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM on Saturday.
