04/06/25 | Shaun Schetka
Cedar Bluff, VA- It was a tough weekend for Southwest Virginia CC as the Flying Eagles were swept at home by a relentless Cleveland CC Yetis squad. Over three games, the Yetis brought the heat at the plate and on the basepaths, taking the series with wins of 12–1, 18–6, and 19–0.
Friday: Yetis Strike Early, Cruise to 12–1 Win
Cleveland wasted no time getting on the board Friday, jumping ahead in the first inning thanks to a Nick Morris double and a Cruise Arnold RBI single. They added another in the second and then broke things wide open in the fourth, putting up five runs on a combination of timely hits and a costly Southwest error.
The Yetis racked up 11 hits and were aggressive on the bases all game, swiping 11 bags. Arnold was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3, while Tanner Britt drove in three runs.
Carter Sterchi picked up the win on the mound for Cleveland, striking out six over four innings. For Southwest, Gabe Cuellar had one of the team’s two hits and drove in their only run of the game.
Saturday Game 1: Bats Come Alive, But Not Enough in 18–6 Loss
Southwest showed some fight in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, especially in the third inning when they rallied for five runs to briefly tie things up. Damien Boyd, Harrison Felger, and Colt Tate all chipped in RBIs, and it looked like the Eagles might swing the momentum.
But the Yetis responded right back, with Owen Liberto’s two-run homer in the fifth and another big inning in the sixth that sealed the deal. Mason White’s two-run triple and RBI hits from Britt, Morris, and Booker helped Cleveland pull away for good.
Despite the loss, Boyd led the way for Southwest with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Saturday Game 2: Yetis Wrap Series with 19–0 Shutout
The final game of the weekend was all Cleveland from start to finish. The Yetis poured it on in the second inning, with Bryson Dempsey doubling in two runs and Cruise Arnold launching a grand slam to left field. They added more in the third and then exploded again in the fifth for eight more runs—highlighted by a three-run bomb from Gage Doss.
Keely Furr was lights out on the mound, giving up just three hits and striking out six over four innings. Doss led the offense with five RBIs, while Dempsey and Russell each added two hits. Cleveland stayed disciplined at the plate, drawing 10 walks and stealing six bases.
Southwest couldn’t get much going offensively, but Cason McInnis, Graham Irvin, and Kian Manske each tallied hits in the loss.
