Game 1: A Tough Day at the Ballpark
Cedar Bluff, VA- SWCC had a rough outing on Friday, falling 26-0 to a dominant Patrick & Henry Patriots squad at home.
The Patriots wasted no time getting on the board, taking advantage of an early SWCC error and a clutch two-run single from Ethan Pickering. Things snowballed in the second, with Patrick & Henry adding five more runs, including a three-run blast from Anthony Alesi.
The third inning was a nightmare for the Flying Eagles, as the Patriots put up 11 runs on five hits. Dylan Grabowski crushed a two-run homer, Bryson Redmond cleared the bases with a triple, and Grabowski capped it off with a grand slam. They weren’t done yet, adding six more in the fifth, highlighted by Alesi’s three-run double.
On the mound, Sophomore Ty Goodson kept SWCC off balance, tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just three hits while striking out four. SWCC’s Brayden Dilday took the loss, giving up six runs (only two earned) in an inning of work.
At the plate, SWCC struggled to generate offense, managing just four hits from Matthew Sevigny, Cason McInnis, Damien Boyd, and CJ Earls. Meanwhile, Patrick & Henry racked up 13 hits, with Grabowski leading the charge with a monster 4-for-4, 7 RBI performance. Alesi and Redmond also had multi-hit games, and the Patriots drew an impressive 13 walks.
Game 2: Flying Eagles Struggle to Contain Patriots’ Power
SWCC ran into more trouble on Saturday, dropping a 14-1 decision to Patrick & Henry as the Patriots’ bats stayed hot.
Patrick & Henry set the tone early, with Dylan Grabowski drawing a bases-loaded walk before Caden Richter launched a three-run homer in the first. Grabowski added a two-run shot in the second, and Alesi joined the home run parade with a solo blast in the fifth.
Luke Haynes controlled the game on the mound for Patrick & Henry, giving up just three hits and one run in five innings while striking out four. SWCC’s Peyton Maines turned in a solid relief appearance, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits. John Ruhl took the loss, getting tagged for four runs in just two-thirds of an inning.
SWCC’s offense was held in check, with Ethan Roberts, Cason McInnis, Graham Irvin, and CJ Earls each notching a hit. Damien Boyd picked up the team’s only RBI. The Flying Eagles did flash some defense, turning a double play.
Patrick & Henry racked up 12 hits, with Grabowski (2-for-3, 4 RBI) continuing his big weekend. Leadoff hitter Carson McCoy was a perfect 4-for-4, and the Patriots ran wild on the basepaths, swiping 11 bags, with Andrew Harris, Hayden Hester, and Carson McCoy each stealing multiple bases.
Game 3: SWCC Drops Series Finale
The final game of the series wasn’t much kinder to SWCC, as Patrick & Henry completed the sweep with a 17-1 victory.
The Patriots struck in the second with a two-run homer from Ty Lagoni, then added another run on a sacrifice fly in the third. A seven-run fourth inning put the game out of reach, with Dylan Grabowski delivering a two-run single, Lagoni doubling in a run, and Tyler White adding an RBI single. Patrick & Henry tacked on five more in the fifth, highlighted by another three-run homer from Grabowski.
Joshua Gunn picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. JP Eads took the loss for SWCC, surrendering eight runs in three innings.
Cason McInnis, Harold Heller, Peyton Maines, and Chris Steele each had a hit for SWCC, while Max McGlothlin drove in their lone run.
Patrick & Henry finished with 10 hits, led by Grabowski (2-for-4, 5 RBI). Lagoni and White added two hits apiece, and the Patriots worked nine walks while swiping three more bases.
Looking Ahead
The Flying Eagles will look to shake off this tough series and get back on track when they take on Cleveland CC in a three-game set on Saturday, April 5. SWCC is eager to turn the page and put together a strong performance at home. The first pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
