Wake Tech Takes Three-Game Series Over SWCC
Series Recap: Wake Tech CC
04/13/25 | Shaun Schetka
Raleigh, NC-Wake Tech used a massive fourth-inning rally to break things open and shut out SWCC 10-0 on Saturday.
The Eagles struck first with a double from Cameron Rickabaugh in the third, but it was the bottom of the fourth that did the damage. Wake Tech strung together seven hits and six runs in the inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Blake Gaffney and Colton Mayes, a double from Nick Schultz, and a three-run homer by Jentz Steiner that cleared the left-field fence.
SWCC starter Peyton Dodson held steady early but was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs in three innings. On the other side, Grayson McDonald kept the Flying Eagles off the board, striking out nine in four and two-thirds innings of work.
Damien Boyd was a bright spot for SWCC, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases. The Flying Eagles played clean defense, committing no errors, and Graham Irvin anchored the infield with five putouts.
Wake Tech collected 12 hits overall, with Matthew Ciprano going 3-for-4 and Steiner driving in three from the nine-spot. The Eagles also played a flawless game defensively.
Wake Tech Rallies Past SWCC Again in Game Two
SWCC came out swinging in Saturday’s second game, but couldn’t hold off another Wake Tech rally, falling 13-3.
The Flying Eagles opened the scoring in the first with RBI hits from Damien Boyd and Kensley Joachim, and a productive groundout by Peyton Maines. But the early momentum was short-lived. Wake Tech responded with two runs in the bottom half, then exploded for five more in the fifth inning, taking advantage of walks, an error, and timely hitting.
SWCC starter Brayden Dilday took the loss after surrendering six earned runs in four innings. Aaron Slep earned the win for Wake Tech, going five innings and allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
Cason McInnis led SWCC at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, while Boyd and Joachim each drove in a run.
Wake Tech’s Colton Penner had a big day, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs, while Jentz Steiner and John Mason chipped in with multi-hit performances. The Eagles showed discipline at the plate, drawing eight walks and stealing four bases.
Wake Tech Completes Sweep After Outslugging SWCC in Finale
SWCC came out hot in Sunday’s series finale, building a four-run lead early — but it wasn’t enough to hold back Wake Tech’s offense in an 18-10 slugfest loss.
The Flying Eagles plated four in the first, thanks to a Max McGlothlin RBI single and a two-run knock from Harold Heller. McGlothlin doubled in two more in the second to put SWCC up 6-2, but Wake Tech answered in a big way. A three-run second tied it up, and a two-run blast from Austin Mooring in the third gave them a lead they wouldn’t give back.
Despite the loss, SWCC put together a solid day at the plate. Cason McInnis stayed red-hot, going 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. McGlothlin and Harold Heller each drove in two runs, and Damien Boyd added a pair of hits.
Logan Williams took the loss in relief for SWCC, while JP Eads started and allowed six earned runs over two innings. Brady Turner picked up the win for Wake Tech, throwing two scoreless frames.
Wake Tech pounded out 15 hits, led by Colton Penner’s five RBIs. Blake Gaffney went 3-for-5, and four other Eagles had multi-hit games.
