Series Recap: Guilford Tech CC
3/24/2025 | Shaun Schetka
March 22, 2025 – Despite collecting 10 hits, Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) couldn’t keep up with Guilford Tech, falling 10-3 in a tough matchup on Saturday. The loss was especially frustrating, as SWCC showed offensive promise but couldn't quite finish strong when it mattered most.
Peyton Dodson and Graham Irvin each had two hits to lead the offense for SWCC. The team struck first in the third inning when Irvin singled, bringing in a run. But that would be their only lead of the game.
Guilford Tech fought back in the sixth, with Manny Cordova grounding into a double play but still scoring a run, and Sam Norton doubling down the left-field line to add another. They then broke things wide open in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Norton’s three-run homer was the big highlight, as he continued to torment SWCC's pitchers.
The win went to Guilford Tech’s Carmine Lancaster, who tossed 7.1 innings of solid ball, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs while striking out 10. For SWCC, John Ruhl took the loss, giving up 2 runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Starter Brayden Dilday worked 5.2 innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) and striking out 3.
While the bats stayed active for SWCC, they couldn’t quite get the key hits to mount a serious comeback. Cason McInnis did lead the team with two RBIs, while SWCC also turned two double plays. But it wasn’t enough to hold back a strong performance from Guilford Tech, who ended the game with 9 hits and flawless defense.
March 23, 2025 – SWCC Fights Hard, But Comes Up Short in 7-3 Loss
SWCC came out of the gates strong on Saturday but couldn’t hold on, ultimately falling 7-3 to Guilford Tech.
The game started with a bit of luck for SWCC. They scored in the first inning after an error by Guilford Tech, and later added another run on a passed ball. They managed to extend their lead to 3-0 when Graham Irvin singled in the third, but it didn’t take long for Guilford Tech to bounce back.
Bobby Lavely’s single in the bottom of the third tied the game at 3-3, and Bryson Morrison’s single in the fourth put Guilford Tech ahead for good, 4-3.
Lavely played a key role in the win, both as a hitter and pitcher, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and earning the win with 4 innings of 1-earned run ball. JP Eads took the loss for SWCC after giving up 5 runs (2 earned) in 4.1 innings.
Irvin had an RBI for SWCC, while Ethan Roberts, Harrison Felger, Cason McInnis, and Max McGlothlin each added one hit. The Flying Eagles also turned two double plays, showing solid defensive effort, but the offense couldn’t generate enough to rally.
March 23, 2025 – SWCC Struggles in 11-1 Blowout Loss
It was a tough Sunday for SWCC, as they were dominated by Guilford Tech in an 11-1 defeat.
Guilford Tech wasted no time, putting up two runs in the first inning on a Bobby Lavely single and a hit-by-pitch to Colin Georger. They didn’t let up, adding four more runs in the second inning, including RBIs from Lavely and GeSean Hardy.
In the fifth, Guilford Tech piled on five more runs, with Lavely continuing his big day with a 3-for-3 performance, driving in 4 runs. SWCC’s lone run came from a leadoff double by Cason McInnis and a sacrifice fly from Dodson.
Wyatt Schaffer earned the win for Guilford Tech, allowing just 2 hits and 1 run over 5 innings. Peyton Dodson threw 3 innings in relief for SWCC, giving up 4 runs (3 earned). Ayden Muliken took the loss after allowing 4 runs in 1 inning.
For SWCC, McInnis was the standout, going 2-for-3 at the plate. But the team struggled to generate much offense against a sharp Guilford Tech pitching staff.
The Flying Eagles will host New River CC on Tuesday March 25th with first pitch set for 2:00 PM at the SWCC Baseball Field.
